TLDR
Donorbox keeps donation collection simple and cost-effective — GrantPipe keeps donor retention measurable. The integration pulls every Donorbox gift into a unified donor record, tracks recurring plans as pledge series, and automates the acknowledgment workflow that Donorbox handles only at the transaction level.
Donorbox is the fastest path to a functioning donation form for small and growing nonprofits. It handles payment processing, basic receipt generation, and recurring plan management out of the box. What it does not handle is the longer-term donor relationship — retention tracking, restricted fund attribution, grant compliance, and multi-year giving analysis.
GrantPipe’s Donorbox integration takes everything Donorbox collects and moves it into a CRM built for that longer-term work. The integration is webhook-driven, so donations appear within minutes. The deduplication logic prevents the duplicate-donor problem that plagues most Donorbox imports.
What the integration does
GrantPipe authenticates to Donorbox using an API key generated in your Donorbox account. On connect, GrantPipe registers a webhook endpoint with Donorbox to receive real-time donation notifications. It also runs an initial deduplication pass — comparing your Donorbox donor list against existing GrantPipe records by email.
When a donation arrives via webhook, GrantPipe creates or updates the donor record, links the donation, checks for a campaign-to-fund mapping, and fires the acknowledgment workflow if configured. Recurring plans are tracked as gift series; failed or cancelled charges update the series status and trigger an alert to the development team.
A nightly full sync acts as a safety net for any webhook events that failed to deliver.
Roadmap status
This integration is on the GrantPipe roadmap. Donorbox is among the most commonly used donation collection tools in the target customer segment. The integration will ship in the payments cluster alongside Classy and PayPal. Contact the team for current timeline.
Data flows
- Donorbox donations → GrantPipe donations (real-time webhook + nightly safety sync)
- Donorbox donors → GrantPipe donors (deduplication on connect + ongoing)
- Donorbox campaigns → GrantPipe fund mapping (nightly)
- Donorbox recurring plans → GrantPipe gift series (webhook + nightly)
Setup steps
- Generate a Donorbox API key in Account Settings → API
- Paste the API key in GrantPipe Settings → Integrations → Donorbox
- Review the deduplication match report
- Map Donorbox campaigns to GrantPipe funds
- Configure acknowledgment preferences
- Set the historical import cutoff date
- Confirm webhook delivery with a test donation
Common use cases
An organization collects gifts through three Donorbox campaigns — general operations, a housing fund, and an emergency relief fund. Each campaign maps to a GrantPipe fund. When the finance team runs a restricted fund balance report, Donorbox revenue flows in correctly without re-coding.
The development director tracks recurring donor retention using GrantPipe’s recurring gift dashboard. When a recurring plan fails in Donorbox, GrantPipe triggers an alert the same day. Most lapsed recurring gifts are recovered before the end of the billing cycle.
Limitations and gotchas
Donorbox’s honor and tribute gift fields — popular for memorial donations — are not fully mapped in the initial integration. They are imported as notes. Full custom field mapping is on the roadmap.
Organizations on Donorbox’s free tier receive Donorbox transaction receipts by default. If you want to use GrantPipe for all acknowledgment communications, disable Donorbox’s receipt emails at the campaign level to prevent donor confusion from duplicate emails.
Historical imports are a one-time batch from the cutoff date forward. Donorbox does not provide a backfill API for very old donations; exports beyond 12–18 months may require a CSV import approach.
Pricing implications
Donorbox’s 1.5% platform fee applies on the free tier. Organizations processing more than $9,300 per month in Donorbox donations typically save money by upgrading to Donorbox Premium ($139/month, 0% platform fee). GrantPipe’s subscription pricing is independent of Donorbox volume. Both subscriptions are necessary: Donorbox for donation collection, GrantPipe for donor management and compliance.

Q&A
What if a donor gives to the same campaign multiple times under different email addresses?
GrantPipe creates separate donor records for each distinct email. The deduplication pass surfaces email variants for the same person as potential duplicates. You can merge donor records manually in GrantPipe's contact management screen.
Q&A
Can I stop Donorbox from sending its own receipt emails?
Donorbox allows you to disable automatic receipt emails at the account or campaign level. If you choose to use only GrantPipe acknowledgments, disable Donorbox receipts in your Donorbox account settings to avoid confusing donors with duplicate emails.
Q&A
How does GrantPipe handle Donorbox's 'honor/tribute' gift designations?
Donorbox's honor and tribute fields are imported as custom notes on the donation record in GrantPipe. Full custom field mapping for tribute designations is on the roadmap.
