Nonprofit Financial Report Template
TLDR
A structured financial report template for nonprofits, including a budget vs. actual summary by program, restricted fund status table, grant expenditure schedule, and the one-page board financial dashboard that development directors and finance staff use for monthly reviews.
Why Most Nonprofit Financial Reports Fail the Board
The typical nonprofit board financial report is a profit-and-loss statement reformatted for nonprofit terminology and emailed as a PDF attachment two days before the board meeting. Board members who aren’t finance professionals scan it, don’t know what questions to ask, and approve it without meaningful review.
This is not a governance failure - it’s a design failure. Financial reports built for accountants, not for mission-driven decision-makers, produce exactly this outcome.
A useful board financial report answers four questions a board member should be able to answer after reading it:
- Are we on track financially for the year?
- Are our restricted funds being managed correctly?
- Are our current grants on track to be spent appropriately?
- Are there any financial risks the board should be aware of?
The templates in this pack are organized around those four questions, not around accounting conventions.
Section 1: Statement of Financial Position Summary
The Statement of Financial Position (balance sheet) tells you what the organization owns, owes, and has accumulated as net assets. For a board financial report, you don’t need the full statement every month - but you do need a summary that shows trend.

Notes instructions: Below this table, include a brief narrative (3-5 sentences) highlighting any significant changes from prior month or prior year. Flag any trend that warrants board attention: a decline in unrestricted net assets, a large increase in accounts payable, or a deferred revenue balance that indicates timing differences in grant recognition.
